The Fourth Annual Fly-In
Reported by Brenda Hylton
The forecast was iffy. We'd had a run of rainy days and the clouds promised more rain, but the die-hard Studebaker Drivers Club doesn't give up or give in.
We met at the Tarheel Restaurant for lunch at 11:30 AM. The Hyltons were late. They misjudged the distance.
With them came the Mitchells, Russell and Phoebe driving their 40 Ford. Brenda Hylton drove their 75 Olds Cutlass and Dalton drove the 64 Commander. The Lucys, Joneses, Pillers and Evelyn, Don Britt, Gary Moeller (in his Avanti), Michael Nash and son, and the Hunnycutts were there.
We caravaned from there to the Spauldings in Ahoskie. After arriving, we were joined by Terry Collins and his grandson Chris in their 56 Stude pickup.
A friend of Mike and Debbie's had their 26 Ford pickup trailered in.
There were 22 planes there.
Two of them were bi-planes with one of them putting on quite a show for us, flying upside down and doing loops.
We were also treated to a great air show...
...with the jet joining in the formations.
There was also an ultralight flown by an ER doctor from a nearby town.
The food was great! Everyone enjoyed themselves. But alas! The famous coffin beer cooler had died. The bottom rusted out. I heard a comment that perhaps it was made from an old Studebaker and that was why it rusted out!
Except for a few light showers, the weather cooperated beautifully and a good time was had by all.
Several people brought gifts of a dragonfly nature to Debbie. I have since heard that Debbie received several Thank You notes from our club members and she greatly appreciated them. We think there were probably 200+ people there.
